Is Claude Cowork Free? I Have 3 Passes to Give Away

Claude Cowork is not free, it needs a paid plan from $20 a month. But a guest pass gives you seven full days free, and I have three to give away.

Desk with a laptop and coffee, illustrating whether Claude Cowork is free and how the free week guest pass works

Claude Cowork is not free. It is bundled with the paid Claude plans, starting at $20 a month for Pro, and Anthropic has never shipped a free Cowork tier. The one legitimate way to use it for nothing is a guest pass, a seven day invite that a paying subscriber can hand to someone who has never paid for Claude. Anthropic gave me three of them, and I am giving them away at the end of this post.

The short answer: Claude Cowork is not free. It comes with paid Claude plans (Pro $20/month, Max $100 to $200/month, Team from $25 per seat). The only free route is a guest pass, seven full days of Cowork gifted by an existing paying subscriber. Each subscriber gets three passes, and they only work for accounts that have never had a paid Claude plan.

What Claude Cowork actually is

Claude Cowork is a desktop workspace where Claude reads, edits and creates files in folders you give it access to, then reports back with finished work. It is not a chat window. You describe an outcome, Claude plans the steps, runs them across your files and connected apps, and you steer as it goes.

That is the part most people miss. Claude chat tells you how to build the spreadsheet. Cowork opens the folder, builds the spreadsheet, and leaves it on your desk. It went into macOS beta in January 2026, landed on Windows in February, and hit general availability on 9 April 2026 with role based access controls, spend limits and usage analytics for teams. There are now builds for macOS, Windows, ChromeOS and Linux, plus web and mobile in beta, and add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Full details are on the official Claude Cowork page.

Things it does that a chat box cannot:

  • Read and edit real files in a folder you nominate, not pasted snippets
  • Run tasks in the background while you do something else
  • Run on a schedule, so a report writes itself every Monday
  • Use a built in browser to fill forms and pull data off the web
  • Run several tasks in parallel instead of one conversation at a time

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. Claude Cowork requires a paid Claude subscription. There is no free tier, no permanent trial, and no ad supported version. The free Claude plan gives you chat only. Cowork unlocks on Pro, Max and Team, and it draws from the same usage allowance as Claude chat and Claude Code rather than getting its own budget.

That last detail matters more than the price. You are not buying “unlimited Cowork”. You are buying one pool of usage that Cowork, chat and Code all drink from. Run three background agents at once and you will meet your limit faster than you expected, which is the AI equivalent of leaving every tap in the house running and then wondering about the water bill.

How the free week of Claude Cowork works

The free week is a guest pass. Anthropic gives eligible paying subscribers three invite links, each worth seven full days of Cowork for someone else. The recipient gets the real product, not a stripped down demo, and the referrer earns about $10 in usage credits (shown as €10 in euro regions) if that person later subscribes, up to $30 across all three.

The rules, in plain language:

  • Seven days, starting the moment you redeem, not the moment you receive the link
  • New accounts only. If you have ever paid for Claude Pro or Max, the pass will not work
  • A payment card is required at signup for a $0.00 authorisation
  • It auto converts to a paid plan on day eight unless you cancel first
  • One pass per person, and each subscriber only has three, with no refill

The card requirement trips people up. Nothing is charged during the seven days, but the subscription does start automatically after them. Set a reminder for day six. I will come back to that.

I have three Cowork invites, here is how to claim one

Anthropic handed me three passes. Three. Not thirty, not a coupon code I can spray across the internet. When they are gone, they are gone, and I cannot get more.

If you have never had a paid Claude subscription, the link below gives you a free week of Cowork:

Claim a free week of Claude Cowork

How to redeem it:

  1. Create a free Claude account first, or log into the one you already have
  2. Open the invite link while logged in
  3. Check the checkout summary reads $0.00 before you continue
  4. Add a payment card (nothing is charged during the week)
  5. Download the Claude desktop app and open the Cowork tab
  6. Put a reminder in your calendar for day six

If the link says invalid, it means all three are claimed or your account has paid for Claude before. No hard feelings either way. If you get one, use it properly, because seven days of a tool this capable is worth more than most of the courses being sold about it.

What Claude Cowork costs after the free week

Cowork is included with every paid Claude plan, so the real question is which plan you need. Prices are per month in USD, billed monthly.

Plan Price (USD/month) Cowork included Best for
Free $0 No Chat only, testing the model
Pro $20 Yes Solo operators, most readers here
Max (5x) $100 Yes Heavy daily use, several agents running
Max (20x) $200 Yes Power users who hit limits on Max 5x
Team From $25 per seat Yes Small teams needing shared admin

Start on Pro. Nine times out of ten, a beginner who jumps straight to Max spends $100 to discover they only had $20 of work to give it. Upgrade when you actually hit the ceiling, not before.

Claude Cowork vs Claude Code vs Claude chat

Cowork, Claude Code and Claude chat are three interfaces to the same models on the same subscription. Chat is for thinking and drafting. Code is a terminal tool for developers. Cowork is for non coding work on real files: research, analysis, documents, spreadsheets, scheduled reports. Most people asking about Cowork actually want Cowork, not Code.

Claude chat Claude Cowork Claude Code
Where it runs Browser or app Desktop app tab Terminal
Touches your files Uploads only Yes, whole folders Yes, code repos
Runs in background No Yes Yes
Scheduled tasks No Yes Limited
Who it is for Everyone Knowledge workers Developers
Learning curve None An afternoon A week if you are new to a terminal

Anthropic’s own research backs the split. In its Economic Index report, Anthropic found Claude Code sessions run more automated on average than chat or Cowork sessions, and that the ten most common tasks accounted for 24% of all conversations in November 2025, with “modifying software to correct errors” the single biggest at 6%. Translation: developers have already industrialised their use of this thing. Everyone else is still typing questions into a chat box.

What I would do with a free week of Cowork

A seven day pass is not enough time to learn everything, so do not try. Pick one repetitive task you already do and hand the whole thing over. Here is the plan I would run, and it is the same one I gave the people I sent passes to.

Day Task What you learn
1 Install the desktop app, point Cowork at one messy folder, ask it to sort and rename everything How file permissions and steering work
2 Give it three months of bank or platform statements, ask for a summary table Whether it handles your real data accurately
3 Ask it to research five competitors and produce a comparison document Browser use and research quality
4 Build one repeatable deliverable you sell or send weekly Whether it can replace billable grunt work
5 Set that deliverable to run on a schedule The feature that actually justifies $20
6 Decide: keep or cancel. Cancel today if the answer is no Nothing, but it saves you $20
7 Write down the two tasks it did best and turn them into a service you charge for How to get the $20 back

Day seven is the one people skip. If Cowork saves you six hours a week and you do nothing commercial with those six hours, you have bought yourself a very sophisticated way to finish early. That is fine, but it is not income. We break the “turn the tool into a service” step down properly in our guide to AI side hustles and in how to make money with Claude AI.

One pairing worth knowing: Cowork is far faster when you stop typing your instructions. I dictate briefs into it with Wispr Flow (code DIGITAL70), which turns speech into clean text anywhere on your machine. Talking a three paragraph brief takes twenty seconds. Typing it takes three minutes. Over a week of Cowork, that gap adds up.

How to cancel before the card gets charged

Cancel inside the seven days and you pay nothing. Go to claude.ai, open Settings, then Billing, and cancel the subscription. You keep access until the pass expires, so cancelling on day two costs you nothing and removes the risk entirely.

Do it on day one if you are forgetful. The trial does not end early because you cancelled, and “I will remember” is the most expensive sentence in subscription software.

The fake guest pass problem nobody warns you about

Search “free Claude guest pass” and you will find directories, Telegram channels and Facebook posts offering passes. Some are genuine subscribers giving away links they cannot otherwise use. Plenty are not.

The pattern to watch for: anyone asking you to pay for a free pass, to install an app to “verify” it, or to hand over your Claude login so they can “activate” it for you. A real guest pass is a plain claude.ai/referral link. You click it while logged into your own account. Nobody needs your password, your seed phrase, or a $5 “processing fee”.

If someone charges you for something Anthropic gives away, that is not a shortcut, it is a small scam with good branding. The same instincts apply here as everywhere else online, which we cover in how to spot a Ponzi scheme.

When Claude Cowork is not for you

Honest version: most people do not need Cowork yet, and $20 a month is real money if it sits unused.

Skip it if:

  • Your work is not file based. If you spend your day in meetings, on calls, or in one web app, Cowork has nothing to grip
  • You have not exhausted free Claude. Do it yourself first. If free Claude chat is not already saving you hours, a more powerful version will not fix that
  • You handle data you cannot send to a cloud. Cowork is cloud only, with no self hosting and no local model option. Regulated client data needs a different answer
  • You want it to run your business unattended. It still needs supervision, and it still gets things wrong. A scheduled task that writes a wrong report every Monday is worse than no report
  • You are choosing between this and groceries. Obvious, but it needs saying in a niche full of people telling you to invest in yourself with money you do not have

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. Claude Cowork requires a paid plan, starting at $20 a month for Claude Pro. There is no free tier. The only free access is a seven day guest pass gifted by an existing paying subscriber, and it only works for accounts that have never had a paid Claude subscription.

How much does Claude Cowork cost?

Cowork is included with Claude Pro at $20 a month, Claude Max at $100 or $200 a month, and Claude Team from about $25 per seat. You are not billed separately for Cowork. It shares one usage allowance with Claude chat and Claude Code on the same subscription.

How do I get a free week of Claude Cowork?

You need a guest pass link from an existing paying Claude subscriber. Each eligible subscriber gets three, and each pass gives seven days of the full product. Open the link while logged into a Claude account that has never had a paid plan, add a card for the $0.00 authorisation, and the week starts immediately.

Do I need a credit card for the Claude Cowork free trial?

Yes. Anthropic takes a $0.00 authorisation at signup. Nothing is charged during the seven days, but the account converts to a paid subscription on day eight unless you cancel. You can cancel on day one and still use the full week.

Can I use a guest pass if I had Claude Pro before?

No. Guest passes only work for accounts that have never held a paid Claude subscription. If you previously subscribed to Pro or Max and cancelled, the pass will show as invalid. Creating a second account to get around this breaks Anthropic’s terms.

What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Code?

Claude Code is a terminal tool built for developers working in code repositories. Claude Cowork is a desktop workspace for non coding knowledge work: documents, spreadsheets, research and scheduled reports across your normal folders. Both come with the same paid plans and share the same usage allowance.

Is Claude Cowork available on Windows?

Yes. Cowork launched on macOS in January 2026 and arrived on Windows in February 2026, reaching general availability on 9 April 2026. There are now builds for macOS, Windows (x64 and arm64), ChromeOS and Linux, with web and mobile access in beta.

Is Claude Cowork worth $20 a month?

It is worth it if you have at least three hours a week of repetitive, file based work to hand over, and you actually do something with the time it returns. It is not worth it if you are only curious. Take the free week, run one real task through it, and decide with evidence instead of hype.

My honest take after using it

Cowork is the first version of Claude that behaves like staff rather than software. That is genuinely useful and slightly unnerving, in the way that hiring someone who works faster than you always is.

But a tool only pays for itself when it is pointed at work somebody is willing to pay for. Take the free week, pick one boring task you already hate, and see if it survives contact with your actual job. If it does, keep it. If it does not, cancel on day six and you are out nothing but the calendar reminder.

Three passes. First come, first served. If you claim one and it changes how you work, come and tell us in the free Telegram community, where we swap the prompts and workflows that actually earn. And if you want help turning this into a service you charge for, book a mentorship session.

The people who will get the most out of a free week are the ones who already know which task they would hand over. If you had to think about it just now, that is your first assignment.
